The Abbot has returned from UN Vesak Conference (07 June 2007)

The abbot of the OBV, Ven. Dr. Dhammasami, has returned to Oxford on June 7. He was away for a month, working in Bangkok for the Celebrations of the United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV, also known as UN Buddha Day. For the last two years, he has been the Secretary of the International Organising Committee (IOC) and helped coordinate amongst Buddhist from different countries.

This year, Buddhist leaders and scholars from sixty-one countries, five continents, participated in the events. They include Buddhist representatives from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Israel, Uganda, Serbia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland and Indonesia.

A special feature of this year was the Symposium of Buddhist Universities. It was the first time in history that as many as eighty Buddhist universities and colleges come together to discuss about collaboration. The Symposium resulted in forming the International Association of Buddhist Universities, with its Secretariat based at Mahachulalongkorn University, Bangkok. (www.mcu.ac.th)

The abbot of the Oxford Buddha Vihara was the main organiser of this Symposium. Indeed it was his initiative and effort that the Symposium has been organised. In March this year, with the support of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, Yangon and Sitagu International Buddhist Academy, Sagaing, he brought together some 18 Theravada Buddhist universities and colleges to form the Association of Theravada Buddhist Universities.
