OBV Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony 2025

The Lunar New Year, held in April, is an ancient annual festival for Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan, Laotian, Cambodian, Nepalese, and Indian people. On this occasion, which falls on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of April, various cultural and religious celebrations are held to mark the New Year. For all Buddhists, this is also the time to make merits in dedication to the departed relatives and to ask for forgiveness and blessings from parents, grandparents, and elders. Each culture has its own name for the event, for example: Songkran for the Thai, Thingyan for Burmese and Aluth Avurudu for Sinhalese.

To celebrate the occasion this year, the Oxford Buddha Vihara will be holding a merit-making and blessing ceremony for the Buddhist community at Tingewick Hall.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you, together with your family and friends, to join us in starting off the New Year with merits and blessings. You may contribute food for the monks, which will be shared among the devotees. There will also be opportunities to purchase food, with proceeds donated to the Vihara.

Dhamma Talk by Bhante Sujato – 31st January 2025

A talk by Bhante Sujato: The Eye of the Storm

We invite you to a Dhamma talk to be given by Bhante Sujato at the OBV in place of our regular Friday night group meeting on January 31st 2025. A senior monk who received higher ordination at Wat Pa Nanachat in 1994, Bhante Sujato is based in Sydney, Australia and has become well-known globally through his co-founding and development of the online platform, SuttaCentral.

We would like you to join us in welcoming Bhante Sujato to the OBV to share the Dhamma.

Location: OBV Oxford, 356-358 Abingdon Rd, Oxford OX1 4TQ.

Date and time: Friday 31 Jan 2025, at 7-9 pm.

Theme of the talk: “The Eye of the Storm”.
The world, it seems, is mad and chaotic. What if this were not a distraction but the essential condition for the stillness that sees?

About Bhante Sujato

Bhante Sujato (also known as Ajahn Sujato or Bhikkhu Sujato) is a senior Buddhist monk from Australia. Before he was ordained, he was a member of the Australian rock band, Martha’s Vineyard. In 1994 he left his music career to ordain in Thailand in the forest lineage of Ajahn Chah. As well as living for several years in forest monasteries and remote hermitages in Thailand, he spent three years in Bodhinyana Monastery (Perth) as secretary of Ajahn Brahm and a year in a cave in Malaysia.

Bhante Sujato combines his love of meditation with study of the Buddha’s Teachings, from practical, comparative and historical perspectives. In 2001 he published his first book “A Swift Pair of Messengers,” which shows how tranquillity and insight work together. He also served as founding Abbot of Santi Forest Monastery from 2003-2012.

In 2005, Bhante Sujato co-founded SuttaCentral, an online digital library of early Buddhist texts that includes sutta translations from the Pali, Chinese and Tibetan languages. Since 2012, Bhante Sujato has focused on translation of the Pali suttas into English. These translations are freely available at SuttaCentral.
